Staying well hydrated is critical for maintaining optimum
health and improving your yoga practice.
Not only does water aid in digestion, body temperature regulation,
disease prevention, and weight control, it also improves physical efficiency
and flexibility—essential components for yoga practice.
Water makes up approximately 60 percent of your body. It is
critical for allowing your body to maintain its vital functions. It is responsible for bringing oxygen
to your muscles, which helps improve physical efficiency and strength.
When undergoing physical activity, such as hot yoga, your
body cools down by evaporating perspiration on your skin. Sweating allows your body to regulate
its body temperature. As a result, it is very important to replenish your body’s
water supply by continually drinking water.
Water is also important in metabolizing fat. Studies have
shown that increased fluid to the body helps break down fat and flushes out
byproducts. It is also an excellent substitute for drinks that
hold empty calories.
The Institute of Medicine advises a daily intake of
approximately 3 liters (13 cups) of water for men and 2.2 liters (9 cups) for
women. Do not wait until you feel
thirsty before drinking water; instead, break up your day with hourly water
breaks. Always make sure to drink
water 15 minutes prior to physical activity and always have a water bottle
during a yoga session.
