The Importance of Staying Hydrated for Yoga

Staying well hydrated is critical for maintaining optimum health and improving your yoga practice.  Not only does water aid in digestion, body temperature regulation, disease prevention, and weight control, it also improves physical efficiency and flexibility—essential components for yoga practice.

Water makes up approximately 60 percent of your body. It is critical for allowing your body to maintain its vital functions.  It is responsible for bringing oxygen to your muscles, which helps improve physical efficiency and strength.

When undergoing physical activity, such as hot yoga, your body cools down by evaporating perspiration on your skin.  Sweating allows your body to regulate its body temperature. As a result, it is very important to replenish your body’s water supply by continually drinking water.

Water is also important in metabolizing fat. Studies have shown that increased fluid to the body helps break down fat and flushes out byproducts. It is also an excellent substitute for drinks that hold empty calories.

The Institute of Medicine advises a daily intake of approximately 3 liters (13 cups) of water for men and 2.2 liters (9 cups) for women.  Do not wait until you feel thirsty before drinking water; instead, break up your day with hourly water breaks.  Always make sure to drink water 15 minutes prior to physical activity and always have a water bottle during a yoga session.

Yoga Super Foods

Regular yoga practice has many health benefits including improved blood pressure levels, circulation, and overall sense of well-being. But healthy nutrition, in addition to yoga, is also critical for maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle. One of the best yet simplest ways of achieving a balanced diet is the inclusion of super foods in daily meals.

Super foods are foods highly packed with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. These foods are known for reducing cell damage and preventing heart disease and other illnesses. Examples of super foods include: potassium and vitamin C rich rhubarb, omega-3 and omega-6 filled pumpkin seeds, protein rich quinoa, as well as goji berries.

Quinoa has become an increasingly popular food in North American cuisine. This super-seed is packed with protein and contains all nine of the essential amino acids. It tends to be fairly filling per serving and is a great meal option before a hard yoga workout.

Goji berries are hailed as one of the newest super foods. This berry (similar in shape and taste to a raisin) is known for treating hypertension, cancers, and other diseases. In the morning before a yoga session, goji berries go perfectly with a hearty bowl of oatmeal. They are also good in flavoring water for a workout.

Become a Yoga Instructor

Tired of being stuck behind a desk all day? Want a more fulfilling job? If you enjoy practicing yoga in between your busy life, consider becoming a yoga instructor. Not only will teaching yoga provide a healthy and rewarding lifestyle, there is also a lot of opportunity for international employment.

Teaching yoga is a profession that has many benefits. Firstly, there is the benefit of good health. Yoga instructors instruct classes several times a week. For every class, the instructor, in addition to the students, works out. This activity burns calories, reduces muscle tension, and provides relaxation.

Another good reason to teach yoga is the endless job opportunities. Instructors can teach classes as a full-time career, or part-time. They also have the option of being self-employed or working at a public facility such as a gym or community centre.

Another fantastic benefit of being a yoga instructor is the opportunity for international employment. Many resorts overseas are willing to pay top dollar for certified yoga instructors.

If you are interested in becoming a yoga instructor, learn more at Vancouver Yoga Teacher Training. A new certification program starts on January 5, 2013 and booking appointments start now through December.
